The new MyPlate icon emphasizes the fruit, vegetable, grains, protein and dairy food groups. There are two specific recommendations for older Americans:
1. Those age 50 and older should reduce their daily sodium intake to 1,500milligrams (mg). This also applies to those of any age that are African American or have hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease.
2. People ages 50 and older are advised to consume foods fortified with vitamin B12, such as fortified cereals, or dietary supplements. For more information visit http://www.choosemyplate.gov/
While they may be inexpensive, common meals like frozen dinners or boxed meals are often high in sodium and don't provide adequate nutrients to keep us in the best health, especially as we age. The slight savings these foods provide can easily lead to increased health costs.
Council on Aging's nutrition experts not only help seniors make sure they are getting a balanced intake of nutrients, but offer meal services which ensure a healthy lifestyle, like social group dining and wellness checks when home-delivering meals.
