Early Diagnosis Is Crucial To Improving Treatment, Support and Information
'Failure to diagnose in a timely manner represents a tragic missed opportunity to improve the quality of life for millions of people...' - Dr. Daisy Acosta, Chairman of ADI

Council on Aging is your local expert on recognizing and caring for those suffering from dementia. We understand that this debilitating disease affects not only the patient, but also the patient’s loved ones. COA is committed to not only helping the patient, but also helping to alleviate pressure and stress on the patient's family and friends.

Dementia interferes with thinking, memory and language skills. Persons with dementia struggle to find words, put sentences together, and stay focused on a topic. It is important that caregivers adapt their communication skills to reduce stress and stay connected.

In addition to our home health services, COA offers activities and programs that help Seniors maintain a healthy mental lifestyle. Studies show, early diagnosis and an active mental and physical lifestyle can reduce symptoms of dementia.

Relief for Caregivers
Council on Aging offers primary caregivers of loved ones with early to mid-stage dementia, 60 years of age and older, a break from caregiving through our Neighborhood Respite Program. Funding is available through a grant for those who meet admission criteria or services can be paid for by the individual.

Persons with dementia need to increase their feelings of self-esteem, express themselves and have a sense of belonging, while caregivers need respite from the ongoing stress of their daily responsibilities. The Neighborhood Respite Program allows caregivers time for themselves while their loved ones participate in a therapeutic, supervised social activity program from 9 am - 3 pm. Caregiver support groups are also offered with respite care available.  Neighborhood Respite Programs and caregiver support groups are located in Daytona Beach, Deland, Deltona, Ormond Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Orange City and Port Orange.

Call Council on Aging at (386) 253-4700, EXT. 204 (Please note this is a change of number) for admission criteria and to schedule an assessment.
