4 Tips to Balance Mind, Body, and Soul

4 Tips to Balance Mind, Body, and Soul

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24 percent of Volusia County residents are over the age of 65. That makes this region ideal to enjoy the Central Florida lifestyle and create lasting memories with friends and loved ones.

Still, there are some people who feel that growing older somehow cancels out the ability to keep active and alert. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, there are a wealth of activities for seniors in and around Volusia County designed to exercise the mind, body, and soul. Here’s how to find them and start feeling your best:

1) Get Active

The body is an intricate machine. Like any such instrument, it requires consistent use to ensure optimal performance. That’s what makes exercise such a key element.

Many people think exercise means huffing and puffing in the gym. The fact is, any kind of physical activity can produce long-term benefits to health, mood, and an overall improved quality of life. Even with reduced mobility, many options exist to get and stay active.

For instance, there’s always something fun and exciting happening at one of our four senior centers, including balance/stability programs, dancing (line dancing, ballroom, organized dance), walking groups, yoga, and much more.

2) Take Care of Your Body

Health experts contend the key to feeling great is paying close attention to nutrition and activity. For instance, dark and leafy greens are rich in essential vitamins. If you’re unable or otherwise not interested in cooking, stop by one of our four senior citizen centers and three dining sites where you can get a nutritious meal.

Proper sleep and rest is also integral to keep your mind and body sharp. Even if you’re not asleep, you can still unwind and get centered through meditation or other activities such as taking a brisk walk outside on a pleasant day.

3) Accentuate the Positive

There’s a popular saying that “many of us spend more time adding up our troubles than counting our blessings.” Taking time each day to be grateful for what you have (materially and otherwise) is important to a positive life outlook.

One way to become ‘centered’ is through deep thought and meditation. Coupled with a deep breathing exercise, this is an excellent way to achieve a calm and tranquil approach to life’s happenings.

At our four senior centers across Volusia County, you can learn the basics of active movement such as yoga and tai-chi, as well as quiet activities such as painting, Mahjong, and more. In addition, we’re the go-to spot for NSB Bingo and other fun activities.
