5 Ways to Get and Stay Well Starting Today

Though it’s hard to believe, the end of another year is fast approaching. When your days and months are busy, it can be difficult to focus on your health. Still, wellness experts say doing just that will help you stay happy and in top physical condition for years to come.

The good news is that you don’t have to make drastic changes to see realistic results. Instead, all it takes is a few small tweaks to be on the road to a healthier you. Get a jump start on your New Year’s resolution and start feeling better today with these tips:

1) Set and Stick to a Routine

If your days don’t always go as planned, you’re definitely not alone. Still, mental health experts say sticking to your daily to-do list as much as possible helps reduce stress.

Even if you can’t change your work and/or other commitments, there are other ways to keep yourself centered throughout the day. For example, we have many fun and exciting activities at our Ormond Beach senior center and other locations throughout Volusia County. That includes yoga and meditation, balance and stability, watercolor and acrylic painting, and more. See the full list of events on our website (www.coavolusia.org) or call us at (386) 253-4700 x 225.

2) Focus on Nutrition and Activity

When you’re busy running from one task to the next, it’s difficult to eat right. You don’t always have the time or energy to pack a lunch. But did you know you can get a healthy meal at a Council on Aging location near you? Contact the senior citizen center you plan to visit to schedule your reservation.

After you’ve enjoyed a nutritious meal, get involved with the many activities and programs we offer. You could take dance lessons at our senior center in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Or, if music is your thing, our “music and the mind” program might be just what you’re looking for. There’s also walking groups, yoga and meditation classes, and plenty of other fun and games to be had. Visit our website (www.coavolusia.org)  for a full list of activities. Or, you can reach us by phone at (386) 253-4700 x 225.

3) Ditch Unhealthy Habits

November is Great American Smokeout Month. What better time to quit smoking once and for all? Health experts say one of the best things you can do in the days and weeks after you quit is spend as much time as possible in public areas where smoking isn’t allowed.

You can also join events that take your mind off your desire to smoke. For example, when you play Bingo in Ormond Beach, Florida, you’ll be so engrossed in the game you won’t even be thinking about smoking. You might also win big! Learn more about this and other exciting activities through our website, or by calling the senior center closest to you.

4) Sleep Better

For various reasons, many people don’t get enough sleep. You might have trouble yourself on some nights. Growing in popularity, yoga and meditation have been shown to dramatically improve relaxation and increase the ability for people to fall and stay asleep. November is also National Sleep Comfort Month. Doctors across Central Florida say sleep is the foundation for overall wellness. It helps improve your mood, mobility, and many other factors. Still, sometimes it’s hard to turn in for the night because you simply have too much to do. It’s nice to know that senior home care is available. Contact us at (386) 253-4700 x 225 to learn more.

5) Get Involved

You’ve probably noticed how you feel better after chatting with a close friend or joining a fun activity. Psychologists say daily interaction with people who share your same interests is paramount to maintaining solid mental health. There are many programs and events you can get involved with at our locations throughout Volusia County. That includes:

  • dance, art, and music classes
  • strategy games (such as Bunco and Mahjong) and board games
  • language and technology courses
  • day trips
  • and more
