Happy Grandparents Day! On September 10th, let’s honor the grandparents in our lives for all they do.
Read on for a few meaningful ways to celebrate!
Grandparents are special for a million-and-one reasons… one of which includes their role in sharing beloved family traditions from generation to generation. Celebrate those traditions by asking grandparents to share old family stories and anecdotes about growing up, or have the family create a quilt or piece of artwork that celebrates your one-of-a-kind heritage.
Have a family lunch
Speaking of tradition… family recipes are undoubtedly the tastiest things to be passed down from generation to generation! Indulge your sweet tooth by helping the grandparents in your family make a tried-and-true casserole dish, or maybe a beloved cookie recipe. Few things bring people together quite like a good meal, so this is the perfect way to turn Grandparents Day into a full-on family reunion.
Take a trip through time
You don’t need a time machine to revisit yesteryear! Simply enjoy activities, dishes, music, movies, and TV shows from Grandma or Grandpa’s own childhood. They’ll get a kick out of the experience, and younger family members will be able to draw comparisons between their own lives and those of their grandparents… which, as they may be surprised to find, might not be so different after all.
Craft a family tree…
It’s always fun to retrace history and see where your ancestors came from! With the help of the grandparents in your family, you can try your hand at crafting a family tree that’s packed to the brim with branches, photos, and details that tell your one-of-a-kind story.
… or special scrapbook
A scrapbook is another great way to celebrate your family’s history and biggest moments. Get the family together to combine photos—print and digital—than can be put to use in this collaborative creation. And of course, you’re not just limited to a paste-and-paper scrapbook. Today’s technology lets you put your favorite photos on display through everything from digital slideshows to cozy blankets (which, incidentally, make for great Grandparents Day gifts!).
We here at Council on Aging would like to wish our community a very happy Grandparents Day… and hope that we’ve been able to provide families with a few fun ways to do the same!
